There’s not much around, it’s hard to meet people who aren’t older, there’s no clubs, everything closes by 7 pm, but the worst part is that the local gas station doesn’t have premium and only takes cash because the debit machine has been down for the last ten days .

This song got me banned from being DJ in university.

Nice! Hit a bit  close to home for some folks?

Oh no, this is back when I was living in Ottawa.

You really had to nail it with the last point there. I never carry enough cash that I could actually fill my car (though if I’m forced to fill it with regular I guess that would be a bit cheaper). That’s ridiculous.

Although I inspected a branded car dealership (as in, not Jim Bob’s Used Crap) today that hasn’t had internet or email for months. I don’t even know how that would work.

I fortunately always carry cash, so putting the $39.50 in wasn’t a huge issue (it helps driving a Fiesta).

But we put up with a lot of crap. Some dimwit dug a hole without calling it in first and broke the fibre optic line to the area, cutting internet and phone service for a day. We had rolling power outages for a week when the hoarfrost came through. I own bottled water for when the water plant goes down. It’s absurd being from Toronto.

In any case, no internet for months?  That’s crazy.

Whatever , it’s a great song.

Also , back to your original post... The Night We Met is an amazing song. A friend of mine from work introduced me to Lord Huron, but they didn’t really strike me until recently. That song is a beautiful dagger right into it heart.

It’s a great tune.

And yeah, it showed up in my feed a few days ago. I love the song, but man, it cuts deep.

There’s a bug in the mobile version that puts that as the authors name. I just thought it’d be funny to set mine as that on  purpose.

I have no interest in meeting someone local for very obvious reasons.

Yeah, I thought so. Co-worker? Some people go down that route....

That makes it tough. I really have no input in this area as I have never really “dated”.

Not a smart route, in my opinion.

I’ve stumbled into my relationships so far, so I have no clue either. Odds are good that I may have about... four years before my next serious/any relationship. Which I guess is okay.

Yeah I know, it drives me nuts.

Seems like kinja has been even worse than normal about not addressing bugs and adding more in the last 6 months or so. I can't believe the left hand margin is still cut off on the mobile post editor.

And the right hand margin! Adding a picture to posts is rough.

Rural life is different, no question. But we would never live anywhere else.

Me and mine were both from the B ig Smoke...but we never would have met each other there.

We met out in BumFuckNowhere where we were working and both got on like a house on fire...that was 19 years, three towns and one child ago.

Still have the same cars though...

Counterpoint:

Being away from it all makes the minor annoyances well worth it!

On the plus side, the noise, pollution, crime, traffic, and cost of living is lower.

I can argue one of those is a moot point, and day to day living is more expensive because a lot of my groceries are twice the price.

Judging by what is near me, no clubs is a positive .  I think lack of job diversity in such areas would bug me most.  I have some family in relative BFE I visit now and then, pros and cons.

That's more than offset by the rent/property prices being way, WAY lower.

The rent is only low for me because my employer owns the house, otherwise there aren’t really any options out here. Buying a house means you’ll never be able to sell.

There are benefits to living in the middle of nowhere, the biggest is that you can slow down. There’s far less to rush about out there, so sit back and stare at the stars (which are far more visible).

I sometimes miss the slow life of my parent’s farm, but I also enjoy being anonymous a nd easily finding stuff in town.

I grew up in a rural area.

Pros- I started driving at 12. No police meant the speed limit was “whatever I can do without my dad finding out”. Ability to work and have responsibility in a way that is difficult in places with pesky labor laws.

Cons- being 2 hours from the nearest bookstore (before there was Amazon). Having 3 girls in your class- definitely made dating a challenge. Getting pulled over by the police in the next county doing 130  and instead of asking for ID, they ask “who’s your dad”, and knowing you are in big trouble.

I grew up in a town of 1,200. The big city for us was Missoula MT. The first time I went to a really big city (Seattle ) I was just amazed. Not much dating action in rural areas, try farmers-only?
